Optimising the booking horizon in healthcare clinics considering no-shows and cancellations

چکیده
Patient no-shows and cancellations are a significant problem to healthcare clinics, as they compromise clinic's efficiency. Therefore, it is important account for both into the design of appointment systems. To provide additional empirical evidence on no-show cancellation behaviour, we assess outpatient clinic data from two providers in USA EU: rates increase with scheduling interval, which number days creation date scheduled for. We show temporal behaviour multiple intervals bimodally distributed. improve efficiency clinics at tactical level control, determine optimal booking horizon such that impact through high minimised, against cost rejecting patients. Where majority literature only includes fixed rate, include rate time-dependent rate. propose an analytical queuing model balking reneging, horizon. Simulation experiments assumptions this viable. Computational results demonstrate general applicability our by case studies hospitals.

Airline Yield Management with Overbooking, Cancellations, and No-Shows
We formulate and analyze a Markov decision process (dynamic programming) model for airline seat allocation (yield management) on a single-leg flight with multiple fare classes. Unlike previous models, we allow cancellation, no-shows, and overbooking. Additionally, we make no assumptions on the arrival patterns for the various fare classes. Our model is also applicable to other problems of reven...
متن کاملDynamic Scheduling of Outpatient Appointments Under Patient No-Shows and Cancellations
This paper develops a framework and proposes heuristic dynamic policies for scheduling patient appointments taking into account the fact that patients may cancel or not show up for their appointments. In a simulation study that considers a model clinic, which is created using data obtained from an actual clinic, we find that the heuristics proposed outperform all the other benchmark policies, p...
متن کاملA hybrid prediction model for no-shows and cancellations of outpatient appointments
A no-show occurs when a scheduled patient neither keeps nor cancels the appointment. A cancellation happens when individuals contact the clinic and cancel their scheduled appointments. Such disruptions not only cause inconvenience to hospital management, they also have a significant impact on the revenue, cost and resource utilization for almost all of the healthcare systems. In this paper, we ...

Considering complexity in healthcare systems
A recent trend in the literature has been to characterize healthcare activities in terms of complex systems theory. Complexity has often been loosely and variously defined, with meanings ranging from "not simple" to "complicated" to "intractable." In this paper, we consider various aspects of complexity and how they relate to modern healthcare practice, with the aim of developing research appro...
